Winter Weather Dog Tips
- Never let your dog off their leash or roam free in ice or snow. Dogs can lose their scents and easily become lost. Statistics show that more dogs are lost during the winter than any other season. If your dog happens to be trained off the leash, make sure he/she wears their id tag at all times.
- After your dog comes from outside, wipe off their legs and stomach. Antifreeze, salt and other cold weather products are dangerous chemicals that could potentially harm your dog. Also, paw pads are prone to bleeding from snow or encrusted ice.
- Giving your dog a short haircut isn't the best idea for the winter. A longer coat provides them more warmth. When grooming your pet make sure to completely dry them before letting them outdoors. Dogs can get sick as well! If you happen to own a short haired breed invest in a coat or sweater to keep them warm.
- If you have a puppy understand that cold weather may be a little rough for them. If your puppy is afraid of the winter weather, try to paper-train it inside until it warms up a little.
- Does your dog engage in several outdoor activities? If so, make sure to increase their supply of food. Particularly focusing on protein.
- Often times someones home can be quite cold during the night. Make sure your dog has a warm place to sleep. Lay a few covers on the floor or make a bed. Either way, ensure they are as warm as you are!
- If your dog is an outside dog be sure to invest in a heated bowl which can be found at most pet stores. Water is extremely important and can easily freeze in frigid temperatures.
- NEVER leave your dog alone in a vehicle. If the engine is off, he/she can die from hypothermia. If the engine is left running, he can be overcome with carbon monoxide fumes.

"My Dog Ate My Homework!!"- Things Your Dog SHOULDN'T Eat!
- Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins can cause acute renal failure in dogs.Which means their kidneys will eventually stop functioning correctly.
- Macadamia Nuts: Macadamia nuts can cause brutally painful muscle weakness, tremors and paralysis. A dog can be affected by just a few nuts. Studies show that both raw and roasted macadamia's can trigger the illness.
- Onions, Chives and Garlic: All of these ingredients contain a material called thiosulphate. Thiosulphate can cause Heinz body hemolytic anemia. Dogs and cats do not have the proper enzyme which digests thiosulphate which causing their red blood cells to clot and weaken. The clumps eventually rapture which shortens the lifespan of the cell and makes the body starve for oxygen. Onions seem to be the most dangerous toxicity although it depends on the dosage. This material can be found in raw, cooked, dehydrates or powdered onions.
- Cooked Bones: Once bones are cooked they become brittle. The most most dangerous bones are turkey and chicken bones because they cause splinters that may cause choking or the bone may puncture or become embedded in their stomach.
- Caffeine: Coffee, soda and any other caffeine related product can cause death within an animal. Caffeine causes a dog's heart to race to impeccable heights and often times dogs can suffer from seizures.
- Corn: Corn is extremely difficult for animals to digest. Their stomachs are entirely too small and their intestines could get blocked indefinitely often causing death.
- Human Medications: NEVER EVER give your animal human medications. Ibuprofen is by far the worst thing to give to your animal. Pain relievers, vitamins and other pills can be affective in a little as one dose!
- Sugarless Candies: Sugarless candies have a toxin called xylitol. It can cause liver problems and even death if consumed by your pet.
- Chocolate: We all are familiar that chocolate is bad for our dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, a central nervous system stimulant that may cause seizures, excessive urination (leading to dehydration), and heart damage.Side effects that are noticeable in chocolate poisoning are diarrhea, vomiting, excessive urination, hyper/restless, panting hard, fast heart rate and excessive thirst.
- Tomatoes: These contain atropine which can cause dilated pupils, tremors and irregular heartbeat. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, next is the unripe (green) tomatoes and then the ripe tomato.
- Cat Food: Cat food is too high in protein and dogs have a problem properly digesting it.

Dog Poo is Bad for You!
FICTION: Dog poo is a good fertilizer! Wrong! Dog poo is completely toxic to your lawn. Often times it will burn or even discolor your grass. This misconception is highly confused with cow manure, which could be beneficial to one's lawn.
FACT: Dog poo is bad for the environment! Under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pet waste is classified as a dangerous pollutant which falls into the same category as toxic chemicals and oil. Yes, your dogs poo is just as dangerous as those deadly gases.
FICTION: Dog poo will go away! Many dog owners think that dog poop will eventually fade into the ground and go away. Due to weather conditions, dog poo does clean itself up but it's lasting effects don't go away. Did you know that pet waste can spread parasites such as hookworms, ringworms, tapeworms and Salonella?Yes, the poop will disappear from your yard but the parasite eggs can linger for YEARS!
FACT: Not picking up dog poo at an apartment or residential community can result in a fine or eviction! Your neighbors don't want to smell your dog's poop, and they definitely don't want to have those moments when they accidentally step in it. Your dog's poo plays a large role in your community. Often times there are other dogs living in the surrounding areas that are effected from dog poo. When walking your dog, be sure to clean up after them. Dog poop has TONS of bacteria that may cause diseases that are particularly prone to children.

5 Ways to Establish a Healthy Relationship With Your Dog
1. Quality Time: Your dog loves to spend time with you, especially if he is the only animal in the house. The best way to spend quality time with your dog is to take it for a walk. It provides you with exercise as well as your dog. Animals have feelings too and can sometimes get lonely. Let your dog know that you still love them by going outside and throwing a ball around for a few minutes. Every minute counts!
2. Structured Routines: Your dog has a tight schedule just like you do. They sleep, eat and play at scheduled times. Keep them on a routine so they can get use to it. It helps keep your busy schedule under control as well.
3. Socializing With Other People and Dogs: Making sure your dog is well-behaved in public is one of the most important aspects of dog ownership! It is extremely important to train your dog so that they can enjoy their time out around other dogs as well as people. As dog owners we understand that many dogs are extremely protective over their owners and that can sometimes result in attacks. Let your dog know that it's perfectly ok to interact with other dogs and that they do not propose a threat.
4. Establish a Sense of Trust: No one wants to feel like a stranger in their own home. Give your dog respect and allow him to develop his own sense of territory, after all, it is their home as well. Pat your dog on the head when you come in from work or give it a kiss before you leave to ensure them that you will be returning. Providing them with that blanket of security makes them feel confident in their ownership.
5. Develop Communication: Often times we scream at our dogs when they mess up. Although we need to punish them and teach them a lesson when they mess up, we also should embrace them and applaud them when they do good. Carry treats around with you and reward them when they have done a good deed. Also,be aware of the tone of voice you use with your pet. Always using an aggressive tone of voice or using violent hand gestures may put your dog into defense mood and they may retaliate against you. Dogs have characteristics that are similar to those of people. They respond to tone of voice as well as facial expressions.
